Back Pain
Causes of Back Pain
Back pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
- Muscle and ligament strains and sprains: This is the most common cause of back pain, especially in younger people. It can happen as a result of sudden movements, such as lifting something heavy or twisting the spine, or from repetitive movements, such as sitting at a desk all day.
- Degenerative disc disease: This condition is caused by the natural wear and tear of the discs between the vertebrae in the spine. As we age, the discs become less flexible and more susceptible to injury. This can lead to pain, stiffness, and decreased range of motion in the back.
- Herniated discs: This occurs when a disc ruptures and the soft inner core bulges out. This can put pressure on the nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, and weakness in the back, legs, and feet.
- Spinal stenosis: This is a narrowing of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This can cause pain, numbness, and weakness in the back, legs, and feet.
- Arthritis: Arthritis is inflammation of the joints, and it can affect any joint in the body, including the joints in the spine. This can lead to pain, stiffness, and decreased range of motion in the back.
- Other medical conditions: Other medical conditions that can cause back pain include kidney stones, infections, and tumors.
How Chiropractic Treatment Can Help
Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, drug-free approach to treating back pain. Your Chiropractor will focus on correcting misalignments in the spine, which can help to reduce inflammation, improve nerve function, and relieve pain.
Your Chiropractic treatment will typically involve spinal adjustments, which are gentle manipulations of the spine to help restore proper alignment. Your Chiropractor may also use other therapies, such as massage, heat therapy, and cold therapy, to help relieve pain and inflammation.
Chiropractic care has been shown to be effective in treating both acute and chronic back pain. A 2017 study published in the journal Pain Medicine found that chiropractic care was more effective than medication in reducing pain and improving function in people with acute low back pain. Another study, published in the journal Spine, found that chiropractic care was effective in reducing pain and improving function in people with chronic low back pain.
